Tok Alaska Public Lands Information Center (APLIC)

Printable version (pdf)
History of the APLIC:
- The current Tok APLIC confined to 700 sq. ft. in the State building is unable to meet the needs of the community and influx of summer visitors.
- In 2007, a revised Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by the AK Dept. of Commerce and Economic Development; AK Dept of Transportation; U.S. Fish and Wildlife (FWS); and Tok Chamber of Commerce to plan, design, and construct a new APLIC and rest area.
Planning and Progress:
- 8.3 acres was purchased by the FWS in 2008, 1.3 miles east of the Alaska/Glenn highway junction.
- The design for the 8,000 sq. ft. visitor center is 85% complete.
- An additional 150K is needed to complete the building design and site plan.
- The total cost of construction is estimated at $12 million.
This first class visitor center will:
- Be a one-stop source of information on the natural resources and recreational opportunities available on Alaska’s abundant public lands.
- Showcase the “Valley Of Great Migrations,” telling the story of natural and cultural events of the Upper Tanana River Valley.
- Include a 110-person theater with state of the art equipment, available to the community for educational programs, meetings, conferences, audio-visual and theatrical presentations, and cultural ceremonies.
- Feature an 800 sq. ft. exhibit area, and a 25-student classroom available for educational field trips, high school/university environmental courses, and other community sponsored events.
- Serve an estimated 200,000 Alaskan residents and visitors annually.
- Utilize practical alternative energy resources and be a model of energy efficiency and sustainability.
