News and Events
- Environmental Literature Reading Group - For several years, a group of interested readers have been meeting during the winter months to discuss selected books. Past selections have included: The Spill, Personal Stories from the Exxon Valdez Disaster by Sharon Bushell and Stan Jones, Road Song by Natalie Kurz, Shopping for Porcupine by Seth Kantner, Dan O'Neill's A Land Gone Lonesome An Inland Voyage Along the Yukon River, Cold by Bill Streever, David Quammen's Natural Acts: A Sidelong View of Science and Nature, and Ned Rozell's Finding Mars. The Environmental Literature Reading Group meets during the winter months: October - April. Please contact Mary Timm for additional information
- 6th annual CaNnes Film Festival Series will be starting again in November of 2011. Each family night at the movies is sponsored by Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge, Duct Tape Radio and Humanities Forum, Helping Hands Food Bank, Gateway After-School Program, and Fast Eddy's Restaurant. Admission is 1 can or package of food for the Helping Hands Food Bank.
- Our 25th annual Christmas Bird Count will be held Wednesday, December 14, 2011. Folks interested in participating should call ahead. Feeder watchers welcomed.
- June - August 2011 As a part of the Environmental Education program, a course for 1 science credit will be offered next summer. Details will be announced later. Please contact Mary Timm for further information.
- National Bird Migration Count - Friday, May 11, 2012 - Biologists often look for local volunteers to assist with this count. Please note: Volunteers should have some previous experience in identifying bird species.
- Eleventh Annual Upper Tanana Migratory Bird Festival - Saturday, May 12, 2012 - Now like a "rite of spring" in Tok, this celebration always hosts many activities throughout the day. Each year, there's a different theme which corresponds to the International Migratory Bird Day theme. Favorite activities include a Bird Tour in the morning, followed by many kids' activities at Memorial Park and the Mainstreet Visitor Center in Tok. Visitors also enjoy seeing displays of Junior Duck Stamp Art and watching the Young Naturalist Contest.
- If you reside in the Tok area, would you be interested in becoming a friend of Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge? We have an active group of Friends we are able to call on for special programs and assisting with special activities. If you're interested in learning more about becoming a Friend of Tetlin NWR, please call our office 883-5312 or contact Mary Timm.
- Some of our local Friends even participate in the state wide Friends of Alaska National Wildlife Refuges. This group is an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting the conservation of the natural resources of all the National Wildlife Refuges within Alaska. The Friends promote understanding and appreciation of these Refuges and assist the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in meeting its mandates.
Friends of Alaska National Wildlife Refuges goals:
- Educate the public and decision makers on local, national, and international levels about Alaska's National Wildlife Refuges.
- Assist the Refuges in accomplishing their missions through wildlife management and habitat improvement projects.
- Fund refuge-oriented projects through grants, memberships, donations, and other activities.
