Outreach and Education

Fire Science Raft Trip. USFWS. Click to Enlarge. The “Fired Up” education program is offered at the Refuge every other summer. High school students study fire ecology, fire fighting and fire behavior for school science credit. The climax of the course is a field trip to the Alaska Fire Service smokejumper base in Fairbanks and a 3 day float trip on the Fortymile River to camp out, enjoy the river and have the opportunity to observe how nearby burned areas are revegetating.

Fire Carnival. P. Butteri/USFWS. Click to Enlarge.Summer fire carnivals, habitat camps and other various summer activities focus on fire’s natural role in the forest ecosystem.

Residents and visitors are kept abreast of summer fire situations through public meetings, flyers and local news articles.

The FireWise program teaches homeowners how to improve the fire “defensibility” of their property. It is offered through various local venues.
